There was a meeting between the Ministries of the World Trade Organization yesterday on the important fisheries subsidy negotiations. Dr. Nicosi, Director General of WTO, Ministers and Ambassadors of other Member States attended the meeting.

Indian fishermen to catch more fish

The meeting was chaired by the Union Minister of Trade and Industry on the Rights of Developing Countries Piyush Goyal Speak sternly.

Goyal, who made a strong argument on behalf of India, said that India is serious about finalizing the agreement and Indian fishermen and their livelihoods have been badly affected by conflicting subsidies and over-fishing by some countries.

He regretted that equality and fairness has not been achieved in the deal so far. The minister also emphasized on promotion of Prime Minister Modi’s favorite fisheries sector and protection of small fishermen.

He warned that mistakes made in the Uruguay era three decades ago should not be mistaken for some developed member states, such as agriculture.

Goyal clarified that countries that still need to improve their fisheries capabilities, including India, cannot give up on their future ambitions. He said that it is unfair to continue giving subsidies to the best countries.

Environmental protection

Goyal noted that environmental protection has long been an integral part of Indian practice and the Prime Minister continued to emphasize that India should end the dialogue if the current and future fisheries needs are balanced and equitable.

Effective specialized and personalized exercises are provided to secure space for growth. He also said that he is committed to future fisheries capabilities.
